Mission
The mission of Socorro Mental Health, Inc. is to provide behavioral health services and to support community efforts leading to healthier lifestyles in a changing world.
History (1991 - 2000)
In 1990, a group of Socorro citizens met because they saw a need to provide comprehensive mental health and substance abuse services for Socorro County. This group had a vision of what could be accomplished when local needs were identified with and matched with appropriate programs.
With the assistance of local civic leaders, health care and family service providers, and other concerned county residents Socorro Mental Health submitted a proposal to the New Mexico Department of Health in 1991. Socorro Mental Health was successful in acquiring a $20,000 contract for substance abuse prevention services for Socorro County. In 1992, Socorro Mental Health submitted a successful proposal and was again rewarded with the mental health and substance treatment services for Socorro County. These first services were expanded and traditional services were added from 1994 - 1997 to meet local need in the area of adult and juvenile community corrections, DWI screening/monitoring and treatment, services for children, and Safe Community Programs. In 1999, Socorro Mental Health further expanded into specialized alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse and prevention programs as well as family planning educational services.
In 1999, Socorro Mental Health moved from its old location at 204 B Neal to its new facility on Highway 60. From its first programs, Socorro Mental Health has seen its services expanded to meet the needs of the citizens of Socorro County. Working together with a dedicated Board of Directors, Staff, and support from numerous local businesses and agencies, Socorro Mental Health renews its commitment to promote the emotional, social, intellectual, occupational, physical, and spiritual well being of individuals in Socorro County.
